UCR vs UCSC vs Cal Poly Pomona vs Cal Poly SLO vs San Jose State for Computer Science?
would you guys decide on a school based on this information for computer science major?? UCSC - http://www.payscale.com/research/US/School=University_of_California,_Santa_Cruz_(UCSC)/Salary UCR -http://www.payscale.com/research/US/School=University_of_California,_Riverside_(UCR)/Salary Cal Poly Pomona - http://www.payscale.com/research/US/School=California_State_Polytechnic_University,_Pomona/Salary Cal Poly SLO - http://www.payscale.com/research/US/School=California_Polytechnic_State_University,_San_Luis_Obispo_(CalPoly)/Salary San Jose State - http://www.payscale.com/research/US/School=San_Jose_State_University_(SJSU)/Salary So.. apparently, UCSC graduates get paid the most in the field of computer science major. So the ranking for getting paid goes: 1. UCSC 2. UCR 3. Cal Poly Pomona 4. Cal Poly SLO 5. San Jose State I have heard that Cal Poly SLO has the strongest engineering program among these schools. But I somehow got this information from my friend and my friend told me to go to UCSC instead for computer science program.... but what do you guys think?? I believe this is not necessarily true. Do you guys think this is true?? Are UC schools really more respected than those CSU schools?

UC schools are more difficult to get into than CSU schools. You can look on their websites and see the stats of those who are accepted and you will see that this is so. That being said, both Cal Polys are highly respected and considered the best of the CSU's with SLO being slightly ahead of Pomona. However, all of these schools are good schools. It is difficult to get accepted into their computer science and engineering programs. I would apply to all and see where you are accepted as you may not get into all of them. It will not make that large a difference in your future pay if you go to any one of them. By the way, the areas around UCSC and SLO are nicer than UCR, Pomona and San Jose. Good luck where ever you go!

That whole place is a cesspool of gangs, a corrupt police force and gated communities. I would rather raise my kids in Oakland.

San Jose has good and bad neighborhoods, but it seems like the city itself is always afflicted with political drama... thieving mayors, corrupt and racist police department, insolvent school district, etc. IMO, you can find just as nice or nicer neighborhoods in some of the smaller adjoining cities like Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Cupertino, or Mountain View. If you are looking for more of the suburban setting, head south about 15 minutes to Morgan Hill.

I would agree that the community college system is the cheapest way to get started. I can't say from experience which school has the better health education program, but, do the research to find out which ones have the program you need. Don't neglect to check out the programs at De Anza, Mission, West Valley, and Foothill colleges. Once you are IN the programs, and begin to approach your AS degree, you can learn about transfering credits and the nursing programs at University, such as San Jose State, Stanford, Santa Clara or wherever. Believe me, a BS in nursing is like gold. With that, you can work pretty much anywhere you want. A slightly faster track would be to a private, secondary school like Bryman or others, but this route is costly. And, not all the credits you earn at such schools are transferable to a four year college.

I agree Evergreen is the best one in the area. The hard thing going on right now is that all the schools have a really long wait time. But before you can apply for the program you must have your pre-recs done. My advise is to go see a counselor so they can tell you exactly what you need to take. And yes A BS is nice but you can still work anywhere with an AS. Just in the future if you want to go into management you'll need your BS. If not an AS will do you just fine. At my hospital we don't hire you over someone else just because you have a BS.

I think that San Jose State will be fine for your needs. Other places to consider are Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Hayward State (CSU East Bay).
2
Most of my experience is in mechanical, chemical, civil, environmental, but I suspect electrical is the same. here's the honest truth: CSUSJ is an accredited school. It is better than many, whatever that means. Employers don't really care which school you graduated from as long as it is accredited. San Jose is a major city in a major population center, so plenty of recruiters will go there looking for graduating seniors (the only potential benefit of one school over another). As long as you are planning to be a "working engineer" and not a future professor, CSUSJ will be as good as any. If you want to get a PhD or teach, then there is potential value in going to more selective/higher cost schools that focus on creating grad students (schools like Cal Tech, Stanford, MIT, etc.)

San Jose state university or California state university Long Beach?? I also find out City College of San Francisco offers certificate program for graphic design. Would it be as good as studying at 4year university? if I moved to San Jose or Long beach, will I be able to live without a car??? (I am currently living in San Francisco and not familiar to other cities in california..) I would appreciate it if you guys could give me some advice..

San Jose has a really good transit system, and is a cool place to live. I lived there for 3 years and loved it! Personly I hate long beach, the air is bad and the people are worse.
2
Do not go to San Jose State for graphic design or any art related program. Their art programs are not good. Long Beach is an ok school, but I dont really like that place either. I think going to the city college is good enough for you because you already graduated with a degree. The city college is way cheaper than a 4 year university. You should do the certificate.

California state university Long Beach offers better art related programs than San Jose .But my friends say that the nature is very bad...

I just moved to San Jose last summer and it is actually a great experience. You got the Tech Museum really close to the University. I go to san jose state university by the way. And I don't have a car but I get around just fine. They give you a free bus pass with tuition and a tour of places you can go with your bus pass. The city is very nice!! I often go for walks. You are like right downtown and anything you need is there. If you end up going there, hit me up. I dont have a problem with helping you. I'm starting my sophomore year next fall.
